Our In the Trenches and High Fives sections are the first two places you should visit if you are looking for resources in a particular area. In the Trenches gives deep, deep coverage of four issues -- climate change, endocrine disrupters, forests, and population -- and includes links to a host of Web resources. The High Fives section contains Website recommendations from more that 50 experts in fields ranging from Agriculture to Women's Health.

Eric & Steph's Earth-Wide Web Site
Bursting with lists of links about where to start looking for environmental information on the Web. There's a bunch of info here and some guidance for the beginner. This "earthy," well-organized site put together by, you guessed it, Eric and Stephanie--both affiliated with Duke University.

Ethical Business: The Big List
Ethical Business is an on-line resource for people interested in ethical and environmental business initiatives, and the ethical and environmental issues that businesses face. Sections include: Research, Trade, Investment, Books, and Rest of the World.

Government Documents Librarianship
Subtitle: "US Government and Politics." A comprehensive listing of, and guide to searching for, government documents on the Internet. Broken down into sections: Directories and Locators, Federal Agencies, Legislation and Regulations, State and Local Governments, and more. Clearly layed out and full of information.

Natural Resources Research Information Pages

Wilderness on the World Wide Web
Largest collection of reviewed wilderness sites on the Web, maintained by Bill Borrie of the University of Montana. Divided into sections: Wilderness; the Idea of Wilderness; Wilderness Areas; Managmenet; Advocacy; Education and Policy.

World Species List -- Animals, Plants, Microbes
This site, featured in the 8/4/97 issue of the New York Times, is in the process of compiling a comprehensive list of Earth's species. The information is extensive, the site is bare-bones simple. Search the whole site, search by country, search just animals, just plants, just fossils, just endangered species. Several other narrower searches available. You can add a species, or a "natural feature" to the database. This site is a work-in-progress but nontheless a vital resource, and good example of the Internet's capacity to aid in the collection and distribution of information.

Earth Island Institute
Earth Island Institute develops and supports projects that counteract threats to the biological and cultural diversity that sustain the environment. Information about Earth Island Institute, details on the institutes's projects, and access to the EII journal.

Earthwatch
Supports scientific field research worldwide through its EarthCorps of citizens and scientists working together. Information about College credit programs, job openings, how to volunteer abroad, and a calendar of events.

Environmental Defense Fund
Information about EDF, programs, and membership. Current enviro news right on the homepage.

Greenpeace International
Information about this organization's current campaigns, its services: Web, print and interactive (including chats).

Greenpeace USA
Access information about the US arm of Greenpeace International.

INFORM
INFORM works to "identify practical ways of living and doing business that are environmentally sustainable." Lots of information on their current program areas: Products and Practices, Chemical Hazards and Prevention, and Transportation. INFORM also has a "news" section, and provides access to their publications (books, reports, and pamphlets).

League of Conservation Voters
Find out what's happening with enviro legislation. Access LCV's national environmenal scorecard for the House and Senate, polling information, communications tools, information on upcoming votes, and descriptions of job openings at LCV.

National Audubon Society
Find the Audubon chapter nearest you. Learn about national campaigns, giving opportunities, and membership.

National Wildlife Federation
Learn about current enviro issues and how to take action. Details on "outdoor adventures" you can take with NWF, memberships, and publications.

Natural Resources Defense Council
Essentially four diffent sites: Worldview, where you can get current enviro news: e-Amicus, online presence of NRDC's Amicus Journal: Pro, makes NRDC technical materials on the environment available: and, Sitings, NRDC's guide to "green spots" on the Web.

The Nature Conservancy
Working internationally for the 46 years to conserve land and water that supports endangered species. Facts and information about the natural world, what TNC is working to protect and how to get involved: TNC work in your state; list of volunteer and intern possibilities; trivia quiz; weekly nature facts; the latest magazine. Also a nature chat.

Sierra Club
Organizational emphasis on "influencing public policy decisions." News, Books, information on several Sierra campaigns. Plus full access to Sierra's two publications, Planet and Sierra. Find out about the Sierra chapter nearest you.

Republicans for Environmental Protection
Formed in 1995 to resurrect the GOP's "conservation tradition and to restore natural resource conservation and sound environmental protection" to the Republican Party's vision. Information on REP projects, upcoming legislation, and state chapters. Action alerts. The newsletter section actually houses press releases, endorsement announcements, letters, and REP's newsletter.

The Wilderness Society
Working to preserve "wilderness and wildlife." Sections on Legislation, regional conservation efforts, a library of publications, current issues, a special section for kids, and a weekly quiz.

World Watch Institute
The Worldwatch Institute recently published an important and persuasive book on environmental taxes. The book, by David Malin Roodman, is entitled "Getting the Signals Right: Tax Reform to Protect the Environment and the Economy." You can view details or order the book.

World Wildlife Fund International
Lots of info about NWF and its campaigns. Also, a newsroom, global action alerts, a special section for kids, a "Green Web Directory," positions open at NWF, as well as some "fun" stuff (quiz and survey). Available in English, Spanish and French.

World Wildlife Fund USA
Information about Wildlife preservations efforts, actions alerts from the US arm of WWF International.

Agriculture Network Information Center (AgNIC)

Arts & Scinece Collaboratives, Inc.
Using "science and technology to explore new forms of expression." Features an artist of the month, reviews past and ongoing shows, provides news from the fields of science and technology. Burning Man
This archive of the Burning Man project will be particularly interesting to devotees of performance and environmental art. Learn about Burning Man events past, present and future. Delve into the history of Burning Man founder, Larry Harvey. Explore other Burning Man internet resources. The host of this archives, z Publications, also provides list of links to public art on the net. z is an online publication with an emphasis on San Francisco area. So, Bay area residents will appreciate z San Francisco, a guide to events.

Nine Mile Run Project
In-depth information about the history, process, funding, and goals of this brownfields reclamation project taking place in Pittsburg, PA. Focusing on the complexities and collaboration necessary to effect a successful brownfields reclamation project, with special emphasis on the contribution of the Art and Humanities. Lots of graphics and maps. This interesting project is sponsored by the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University.

Soros Center for Contemporary Arts - Prague
Part of a network of foundations and institutions established and funded by Hungarian-born George Soros, focusing on Central and Eastern Europe, the Baltics, and the former Soviet Union. Includes: upcoming exhibits (and a calendar of other events); museums, galleries, and other installations where Czech art is being exhibited; how to get grants and residencies; a list of other art sites; and an archive. Of particular relevance to Liberty Tree's work, is an internet discussion on Public Art. Available in in Czech.

Texas Cultural and Arts Network
Aims to be a one-stop-shop for information on the Arts in Texas, and succeeds. Operated by the Texas Commission on the Arts, this site brings the Texas art community (from every angle) to the internet. In many ways a service site for Texans, Texan Artists and other interested parties. Loads of information -- all Texas oriented: examples of artists' work, what's happening in the community, lists of exhibits, educational material, public art, information about Health and Dental benefits for Texas' artists, as well as a guide to other government benefits.

U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP)
Working with research institutions in the US and beyond to increase our ability to predict seasonal-to-interannual and long-term climate change. The two sites below fall under its umbrella.

U. S. Global Change Research Information Office (GCRIO)
Provides access to data and information on global change research, adaptation/mitigation strategies and technologies, and global change-related educational resources. Works on behalf of the various US Federal Agencies and Organizations. Extensive.

Corporate Watch
New in April, a joint project between TRAC--the Transnational Resource and Action Center and IGC--the Institute for Global Communications. Dedicated to "building greater democratic control over transnational corporations." Links to info on multi-national corps., e-mailaction alerts, and information about how to act locally. For those without Web access, an online text-based conference (corp.watch) is accessible through any network affiliated with the Association for Progressive Communications.

Public Information Network
Research and technical assistance to communities working to hold corporations and governments accountable. Caretakers of the Environment International (CEI)
Increasing student awareness of the "planet as one interdependent environment" through education. Subscribe to the periodical CEI publishes for students and teachers, location of national branches, and CEI's annual conferences. This years conference -- Environment and Communiation -- is being held in Isreal from June 22-26. Post June 26 the conference site will contain outcomes from t he various working groups.

Children's Health Environmental Coalition

This organization is made up of citizens, present former and retired Forest Servcei employees attempting to "forge a socially responsible value system for the Forest Service." Find out about FSEE, its programs, and publications. Get current forest news. Check out their Education section -- a program to teach young people to think critically and holistically about ecosystems and human impact. Links to related sites.

USDA Forest Service

Green Corps
This organization is both a grassroots organizer and field school for environmental organizing, training future environmental organizers. Get details about the organizer training program and an application.

TRANET
Put together by a network of organizations and individuals working to create "the new social paradigm." A bi-monthly Web digest of both the Alternative and Transformational, and Gaian Cultural Transition movements. Many book reviews and abstracts--ordering information usually included.

American Museum of Natural History
Learn about current and upcoming exhibitions, take virtual tours of museum "treasures," get information on educational and research offerings, and shop in the museum store. This site has beautiful graphics.

Exploratorium
Lots of information about this museum of "science, art, and human perception." Get information about many of the museums exhibits (present and upcoming), Exploratorium programs, the Teachers Institute, the Institute for Inquiry, membership, and job opportunities. Especially for the Web are a "digital Library" exhibit and a recommended Websites section.

The Smithsonian
Main page for the many museums, events, activities, and resources under the Smithsonian umbrella. Become a member and shop at the museum store.

 

NEWS

ENN Online - Environmental News Network
The "environmental science supersite." And super it is. Each day the ENN staff of journalists, researchers and scientists -- in association with Reuters, Knight-Ridder/Tribune, Associated Press, and others -- brings you environmental news from around the world. The ENN Newswire is daily and free, the more in-depth ENN Daily News will cost you about $50 a year. Visit the Newsroom, or "Channels" that focus on specific topics, a calendar, the Site of the Week, Factoids, A Wed guide, a weekly what's-up-on-the-Web column (CyberHiker), and more.

Planet Ark
Austrialia-based environmental organization that works with businesses to create initiatives that have a positive impact on the environment. Their site is snazzy and well organized, complete with several celebrity endorsers who are present image, opinion and voice (thanks to Real Audio). Learn about Planet Ark programs and initiatives, download free software, visit the eco-store, and search the Net for enviro topics. Especially interesting is their Reuter's co-sponsored World Environment News service which will send headlines and news updates to you via e-mail. This is an easy way to keep informed of the world environment news that is posted on Planet Ark.

San Diego Earth Times
Regional: San Diego. The "monthly reader of life and the environment." A good resource on politics, issues and events in the San Diego area. The Earth Times itself (which also appears in a print version) contains articles on subjects from local/coastal ecology to Education to Gardening to Health. The on-line sites has some additional features: a eco-calendar of events in the San Diego area, organic gardening tips, plus a marketplace (buy some eco-stuff), archives, and lists of relevant links.

Tidepool
Regional: Pacific Northwest. Tidepool tracks the ebb and flow of life in the coastal temperate rainforest region, defined as the strip of forest along the Pacific, from Alaska's Kodiak Island to Santa Cruz, Calif., and inland as far as the crest of the Cascades. The editor creates the day's page from 6 to 9 am Pacific time, 5 days a week, scanning papers as diverse as the Seattle Times and the Toronto Globe and Mail, the Juneau Empire and the Daily Astorian. The site neatly avoids copyright issues by simply linking to the newspapers' articles at their own websites. Also offered are original dispatches from the region, which are the only items archived on the site -- nothing else is over a week old. Good resource for locals or others interested in this incredibly beautiful section of the US.

The Center for the Restoration of Waters @ Ocean Arks International (OAI)
Water awareness and action. Fouders John Todd (also founder of the New Alchemy Institute) and Nancy Jack Todd use ecological knowledge to solve water pollution problems. Focus on ecological engineering and Living Machine technologies. Sections on current Living Machine projects, education, environmental design services, and how to become a member of OAI.

Surfrider Foundation
Dedicated to the protection, preservation and restoration of the world's oceans, waves and beaches. Get daily surf conditions and water quality reports for S. California. Sections include: education, coastal factoids, "culture," and Surfrider organizational information.

Extensive, with sections on almost everything you will need to know, do, or buy before recreating outdoors. Not specifically for enviros, but with lots of information for the conservation minded nontheless.

National Park Service
Extensive, with information on all the national parks--large and small. You can search for parks by name or location. Sections include: natural resources of the parks; educational resources of the Parks Service; history of the parks; info on the National Parks Service itself. If you are planning a trip to one of the parks start here for reservation and fee information, maps, and links to the homepage of the park of your choice.

The KZPG Population News Network
Comprehensive set of email lists, and advanced discussion forums dedicated to stopping population growth. Volunteer run. Subscriptions necesary, but free.

Reproductive Health Materials Working Group
Group of organizations-- all working with the Population, health and Nutrition Center of USAID--whose goal is to increase inter-organizational cooperation. Reams of information available here. People Centered Development Forum (PCDF)
Dedicated to the creation of "just, inclusive, and sustainable human societies through voluntary citizen action." Information about PCDF's mission, history, and defining values. Relevant articles by experts in the field of holistic, people-centered sustainable development. Also posted are archives of "The Global Citizen," a weekly newspaper column written by Donella Meadows, an old hand at sustainable living issues. This is the only Web archive of her column.

Urban Ecology
Devoted to "development of ecologically healthy and socially vital cities and towns." Learn abut the organization and their projects, sign up for their award-winning quarterly journal (free trial offer on site right now), or check out examples of "healthy" cities. Focus on the Bay Area.

Waitakere Eco-City
Site of the city of Whitaker, New Zealand, a city committed to sustainable management. Whitaker fully embraces the Agenda 21 charter laid down at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. Some reads a bit like a travel brochure, but interesting nonetheless. Beautiful graphics.

 

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation for Livable Communities NETwork
Resources for those interested in how changes in transportation can create more liveable communities -- for urbanites, suburbanites and ruralites alike. Primarily a Net hub for interested people, not an organization per se, it provides discussion group, listservs, resources documents, and link to relevant Websites. Sthis site is a project of the Conservation Law Foundation.
