John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur FoundationWorld Environment and Resources Program supports conservation, public education, policy studies, and sustainable development projects relating to key environmental issues in the tropics. Site has information on all of these programs, as well as links to other foundation and non-profit resources and detailed information on MacArthur grantees.
Supports environmental projects in the United States, Central & Eastern Europe, and East Asia. Forest related programs are approached through concept of biodiversity conservation, with a special emphasis on temperate rainforests. U.S. grants are focused on model programs and public policy; in Central & Eastern Europe on strengthening local institutions and fostering regional cooperation; and in East Asia on promoting conservation and economic development and using applied ecology and political ecology to improve forest management.
Supports forest projects throughout US. Focuses on forest preservation, sustainable forest use, and education and organizing.
One of the more technically advanced private foundation sites on environmental issues. Detailed information and links to grantees and a number of on-line environmental networking sites. WAJF forest related grants cover everything from capacity building for grassroots groups to national and international policy issues. Support for forest activities in US (with focus on Pacific Northwest), British Columbia, Brazil, and Indonesia.
Environment program is probably the largest domestic private foundation funding source on forest issues. Pew supports nonprofit groups at the local, regional, and national levels, with emphasis on regional campaigns for forest preservation and national policy dialogue.
Conservation Program is growing rapidly, and supports projects that protect and conserve rich habitats, including wetlands, riparian forests, and ancient forests in California and Pacific Northwest. Proposals considered which involve planning, restoration, work with private landowners, support for land trusts, and science-based management practices that encourage healthy functioning of natural systems.
Grants only in the Pacific Northwest, defined as Alaska, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. Endangered Ecosystems program helps organizations that demonstrate both ability and intent to develop stewardship policies and practices that protect endangered Northwest forest ecosystems. Also, grassroots organizing and outreach, scientific and economic studies, media strategies, litigation, and computer networking. Links to other funders of Pacific Northwest forest issues.
Forest related grants are made through Community and Resource Development program. Aim is to give low-income people greater ownership and control of key community institutions and resources. The Ford Foundation makes grants in the US and in many developing countries.
Objectives of forest program at Turner is to defend biodiversity by protecting natural habitat. Priorities include supporting ecosystem-wide habitat protection with particular emphasis on locally-developed strategies for public lands; supporting efforts which defend wild places from destructive practices such as mining, logging and overgrazing; supporting advocacy efforts which address relationship between wildlife, habitat protection and economics; and protecting forest ecosystems through reducing wood consumption. Grants made in New Mexico, Montana, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida.
Global Environment Facility, jointly managed by World Bank, UNDP, and UNEP, has a $2 billion fund to provide grants and concessional funding to developing countries for many forest projects (among others). GEF projects must be country driven, incorporate consultation with local communities and, where appropriate, involve non-governmental organizations in project implementation. Typically, grants are multi-million dollar disbursements made in consultation with national governments, but GEF also has a Small Grants program which targets grassroots organizations for grants up to $50,000.
